The most expensive purse in the world is made of 24 carat gold, worth ?35 million and created by Italian jeweller Fondaco Brandoli. The purse is a replica of Elizabeth II’s State Coach, a travelling carriage that is used to transport the British Royal Family. It was commissioned by a Japanese client who wanted it to be placed in the room where she stays during her royal visits.The purse has eight panels; all are decorated with intricate ancient-Greek scenes of Aphrodite riding a chariot drawn by winged horses which represent fertility and beauty, and were designed by the artist Tamara Beaumont. The chariot has a golden head decorated with false hair. It was made by Venini, the goldsmiths who supply all of Fondaco Brandoli’s precious wares. The entire purse weighs 12kg (26lbs) and is 22cm (8 inches) high.To make this unique item, Fondaco Brandoli used 2kg of gold to weave together with around 80 other kilos threads from Italy, Turkey, Thailand and Egypt and then put it under great strain so it could be worked into shape, finally attaching it all together at the end using tiny screws.
